Edition EvidenceThe original decorated boards and illustrated undated title page identify the 1858 first edition. Melbourne separately holds an 1859 second edition acquired from the same bookseller.

Ownership EvidencePurchased in 2007 from the Colophon Book Shop, Exeter, New Hampshire, together with Melbourne's 1859 second-edition copy.

Presentation / Association

Two separate 1858 inscriptions make this a direct authorial presentation to both of Charles R. Hale's parents. The front-pastedown inscription reads: “Reuben C. Hale / from his son / Charles R. Hale / 1858.” A second inscription reads: “Sarah Jane Hale. / from her son / Charles— / Christmas 1858.” Both inscriptions use ‘Charles’ in full, unlike the abbreviated ‘Chas.’ in other documented Hale presentations.
