Edition EvidenceThe title page is missing, apparently lost to the same undocumented repair that rebacked the spine, carried out before 1980; no record of the work survives. The volume's surviving original cream paper boards are themselves diagnostic of the 1858 first edition, since the 1859 second edition was issued only in cloth-covered bindings. The surviving preliminary leaves — including the committee's facsimile signature leaf dated June 1857 — carry no "Second Edition" statement.
