BindingLater tan cloth institutional library binding with gilt spine lettering. Shippensburg staff identified it as a twentieth-century library binding rather than the original publisher binding.

Edition EvidenceThe illuminated title page has no “Second Edition” statement. Repository examination and the physical evidence confirm the 1858 first edition.

Ownership EvidenceAn Ezra Lehman Memorial Library bookplate bears the former name “Shippensburg State College,” used before university status was attained in 1983.

Copy-Specific Marks

The illuminated title page bears the number “46” in blue, either stamped or written. The final printed page bears the stamped number “7451.” Their original functions have not yet been established.

Catalog and Acquisition Evidence

The electronic system records a receiving date of December 19, 1997, but repository staff believe that date probably reflects migration into the electronic catalog. A date of September 25, 1970 appears in the MARC 049 field where an accession number would ordinarily be entered. That date is consistent with the Shippensburg State College bookplate, but the original acquisition source is not documented.
