Provenance Narrative
The presentation is to the author’s uncle, Dr. Elias White Hale. A later gutter mark reads ‘H.W. Popp,’ identified as Henry W. Popp. Popp’s papers at Penn State contain Elias White Hale’s diary, medical-school notes, and daybooks in ‘Hale, Elias & Mary, bulk: 1795–1898.’ The route from the Hale family to Popp is unrecorded.
